Canberra is designed as a series of satellite town centers joined by main arterial roads. Canberra's public transport service, ACTION buses operates every day of the year and has services that cover the major sights and most suburbs quickly and easily! Canberra is the nearest major city to Australia's ski resorts and within a 2-3 hour drive of the New South Wales South Coast, a popular beach resort area. Both these areas are regularly serviced by coach. Canberra is the capital of Australia and home of the federal government. New Parliament House occupies the central hill with the city planned around its north/south and east/west axis.

Canberra is cold in winter with night temperatures dropping below 0 Celsius. Day temperatures in summer are as high as 35 Celsius with mild nights. Canberra is the hub of the ACT and of a much greater region of southern NSW, where bushwalking, cycling, swimming and a host of other activities are the norm. Canberra was decided as the federal capital in the late 1880s for a very simple reason - which was located roughly halfway between the two major cities of Melbourne and Sydney.
